Fireside Chats – Transition into Data Field – Zoe, Lauren and Mahwash

Our latest Fireside Chat on Data Career Transitions with members of the Data for Hope™ Education Team was so inspiring and informative! Our panelists shared their experiences, lessons learned and best advice to our Education Program cohort and guests.

Some highlights from the panel:

  1. Invest in yourself and take advantage of available resources. This includes setting aside time to learn important data skills such as programming, visualization and statistics. You don’t have to know all the tools but focus on a few to build your skills on. Create projects to demonstrate your skills.
  2. Build your network. Attend meetups, conferences or volunteer. Our panel members found volunteering for ATLytiCS valuable for building relationships and enhancing soft skills such as collaboration, communication and leadership. This is one way to make networking more relational vs. transactional.
  3. Resilience and perseverance are crucial. Treat each setback as a learning opportunity, and highlight how your unique background can be valuable in the data field. It may not be a short and easy road but it will be worth it.
