Fireside Chats – Portfolio building, job searching in the data analytics industry – Abhijeet Patil

Before Data for Hope cohort started working on their capstone projects, Abhijit Patil, Assistant Vice President, of Data Analytics at U.S. Bank, shared his perspective on the #analytics industry and job search process.

Here are some highlights from his conversation:

  1. Analytics will continue to have more and more demand due to the volume of data that’s continuing to be collected. Numerous analytics models are starting to delve into automated machine learning but still need a human touch.
  2. There are many banking analytics applications, such as scenario analyses to assess liquidity, customer retention/lifetime value, and customer marketing effectiveness.
  3. Switching domains at the entry/junior level is typically easier within the same business function (ex. transitioning from CRM analytics in the healthcare space to CRM analytics in the finance space).
  4. Developing a diverse set of skills (statistics, data querying, data cleaning, data visualization, etc.) for analytics is essential. Bootcamps and certifications are a great way to learn a skill set quickly. Remaining curious is one of the softer skills that allows someone to be an influential analyst.
