Fireside Chats – Career Transition with Refcode Alumni

Our Data for Hope Education Program students had the privilege of hearing from Yohannes Bahta on transitioning careers during our recent Fireside Chat. Yohannes shared important advice and tips from his personal experience for our students who are currently navigating this process:

  • Get clarity on your motivation for changing careers and what your future goals are. This will help you focus on areas for training or upskilling. When learning a new field, focus on one thing vs. a little of everything, and make sure it’s relevant to your career goal.
  • Put yourself out there. Update your public profiles and showcase your projects. Join communities and engage with people in your desired field. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are sincere and straightforward, most people are willing to extend help.
  • Apply, apply, apply. Even if you don’t get the job, the process of applying is beneficial in building confidence, learning what employers are looking for and refining your interview skills.
  • Once you land a job in a new field, it’s normal to feel lost or experience imposter syndrome. You can overcome this by asking questions and asking for help. Remember that success does not happen overnight.
